WHAT'S OBSOLETE...'THE OLD COVENANT OR GOD'S LAWS'...REALLY?

What is OBSOLETE "The Old Covenant or God's Laws?

The new covenant renders the old covenant obsolete. The old covenant is not the same as the Ten Commandments

A covenant is an agreement; commandments are laws or terms of the agreement.
The Ten Commandments are the words [terms, Jewish Publication Society translation] of the covenant not the covenant itself (Exodus 34:27-28). The covenant or agreement became obsolete, not the laws within it.

The word "obsolete" (Greek: palaioo) means "things worn out by time and use" (Vine's Dictionary of Biblical Words). Hebrews 10:9-18 shows Christ's sacrifice made animal sacrifices obsolete. But the old covenant was not suddenly discarded or forbidden in the New Testament Church. It simply faded into disuse as people became aware of the superiority of the new covenant and came under it. But the law of God will never become obsolete (Matthew 5:18).

Some wrongly assume that all Old Testament laws are obsolete unless repeated in the New Testament.
The New Testament is a record of members living by the terms of the new covenant. But nowhere does the Bible say all new covenant laws are recorded in the New Testament. Rather, the laws of the new covenant are written in the minds and hearts of God's people.

ALL Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
(2 Timothy 3:16 KJV)

A "new covenant"

Jeremiah 31:31-34 prophesies about a new covenant. The book of Hebrews provides the main New Testament commentary on this new covenant.

Why is it called new? The New Testament uses two different Greek words for "new": Neos means new in contrast to old. Kainos means "new" in the sense of "unique". Hebrews 12:24, which identifies Jesus Christ as the mediator of the new covenant, is the only scripture where neos is used in reference to the new covenant. Every other passage uses kainos. So the "new covenant" is unique.

How is the new covenant unique and better than the old?

Hebrews 8:6 tells us the new covenant is better than the old because it contains better promises. Promises which were never before offered and thus unique to the new covenant. Hebrews 8 enumerates three such promises.

Hebrews 8:10 (King James Version)

10For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

"I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is in my heart" (Psalm 40:8).

SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW, OUR TRANSGRESSIONS, OUR INIQUITIES, OUR SINS (EVIL) BEFORE THE LORD. IT MAY NOT SEEM 'EVIL' TO US, BUT WHAT DO WE KNOW, WE ARE BUT MAN, OUR TRUST IS IN GOD, HIS WORD. SO GOD TELLS US WHAT SIN IS, OUT OF HIS GRACE HE HAS GIVEN HIS PEOPLE HIS LAWS (ON THE "5th Annual Sabbath" DAY OF PENTECOST) AND HE HAS GIVEN HIS PEOPLE HIS SPIRIT (TO KEEP HIS LAWS) ALSO ON THE
"5th Annual Sabbath" DAY OF PENTECOST "Important to 'see' understand).

WHAT A GRACIOUS GOD, CREATOR OF ALL AND PATIENT WITH HIS PEOPLE, THANKS BE TO HIS LOVE AND MERCY, FOR OUR FATHER LOVES US. HE HAS A PLAN, FOR THE SALVATION OF MAN. AND HE CHANGES NOT, IT IS FOR THIS CAUSE THE SEED OF ABRAHAM (HIS GRANDSON JACOB SPIRITUALLY AND PHYSICALLY ARE NOT CONSUMED) SO THE LAW POINTS OUT SIN, THE LAW SHOWS WHAT SIN IS, SO WHEN WE TRANSGRESS THE LAW WE ARE COMMITTING SIN FOR THAT IS WHAT SIN IS, THE TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW, GOD'S LAW (NOT THE LAW OF MOSES WHICH ENDED AT THE [CROSS]-"STAUROS"??)
"Sin is the transgression of the law." This is the only definition of sin. Without the law there can be no transgression. "By the law is the knowledge of sin."

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.  1 John 3:4 KJV
Everyone who is a sinner goes against the law, for sin is going against the law.1 John 3:4 BBE
Everyone who commits sin also breaks the law; sin is the breaking of law.1 John 3:4 CSB.
The person who sins breaks God's law. Yes, sin is living against God's law. 1 John 3:4 NCV
Everyone who sins breaks the law. In fact, breaking the law is sin. 1 John 3:4 NIRV
Those who sin are opposed to the law of God, for all sin opposes the law of God. 1 John 3:4 NLT
Everyone who sins also commits lawlessness. Sin is lawlessness.1 John 3:4 WEB
Every one who is doing the sin, the lawlessness also he doth do, and the sin is the lawlessness, 1 John 3:4YLT

Lawlessness (Sin)

1. WHAT IS SIN?
By way of definition we may say that sin is a godless attitude of mind which manifests itself in disobedience of the commandments of Yahweh the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel. The Bible says simply:
1 John 3:4 "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law:
for sin is the transgression of the law."

In other words when a person violates one or more of the Almighty's commandments, then that person is sinning, whether he/she knows it or not. 2. PURPOSE OF THE LAW
Why was the law given in the first place? Do we need moral laws?
Romans 3:20 "... for by the law is the knowledge of sin."
Romans 7:7 "What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. "

You will see from these texts that Yahweh's law defines sin. It brings it to one's notice. It details the behaviour the Most High considers right and wrong. Humanity is incapable of defining sin. Only the Creator can do that. Were a society to totally set aside Yahweh's law, the law which defines sin, then within a single generation people would become incapable of even recognising error. Such a society would inevitably descend into a vortex of vice, violence and vandalism beyond our ability to imagine, let alone control. 3. TYPES OF LAWLESSNESS
Sin is lawlessness. Sin is breaking divine law. From the Biblical viewpoint lawlessness, disobedience and sin are three words meaning the same thing. The two words 'sin' and 'disobedience' are interchangeable. Broadly speaking, sin may be divided into two categories:
  1. Obvious Sins
These are the all too evident sins of blasphemy, deceit, theft, violence, rape, sodomy, adultery murder etc.
  2. Not so Obvious Sins
Then we have the socially acceptable sins such as unbelief, covetousness, ingratitude, envy, pride and Sabbath-breaking.
All these sins are really expressions of rebellion against the Almighty's law. The spirit of rebellion was first manifest in the mind of Satan, the first sinner ever to be. 4. ALL OF US ARE BORN WITH A LAWLESS NATURE
Few people would admit to being lawless or sinful. Nevertheless, it is true to say that sinful tendencies are inherent in every human mind and make-up. The Bible says:
Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God"
Romans 5:12 "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:"

Yes, it is a tragic truth: We have all sinned, and we have all sinned repeatedly. What's more, the human mind is naturally antagonistic towards the Almighty's law and instinctively seeks to reject it. This is a far more serious problem than people realise. The inspired writer continues:
Romans 8:7 "Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be."
Jeremiah 17:9 " The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

The spiritual mirror the Creator uses to show a sinner his/her sinful condition is His law. But the human heart (mind) is at war with the law of God. It is not naturally subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. By the divine standard the human heart is sick! Such is the inspired assessment of the human mind: and before the reader can ever hope to make any spiritual progress in life, that ego-shattering divine diagnosis must be recognised for what it is - the truth! Are you willing to acknowledge that fact? 5. EFFECTS OF LAWLESSNESS (Sin)
Individual lawlessness produces guilt, pain, mental disorders, family break upheavals, disease and finally death. On the national and international scale, lawlessness repels the Spirit of God and results in all kinds of social, political and natural calamity: poverty, vandalism, revolution, war, freak weather conditions, famine, disease epidemics, earthquakes and disasters of all kinds: disasters which most people believe happen 'purely by chance.' The truth is, few things happen 'purely by chance.' For everything there is a cause; and that cause is more often than not linked to moral degeneracy. Read Deuteronomy chapter 28 where the amazing link between a nation's moral behaviour and its welfare is explained in detail.
6. JESUS CHRIST, THE ONLY REMEDY FOR SIN
Lawlessness (sin) cannot be pampered, educated or somehow coaxed to quietly go away or even to change its nature. For sin is an incurable spiritual malady: a moral form of AIDS with which Satan has infected mankind. Indeed, sin must needs be totally rooted out of the human mind, else it will destroy civilisation. Sin is not just another social problem. Sin is a spiritual problem and nothing short of a spiritual cure will get rid of it. Jehovah (Yahweh), for that is the name of the God of Israel, must either overcome and annihilate sin, or sin will overrun the universe.
Yahweh's agent for the annihilation of sin and the salvation of mankind is none other than His only begotten Son Yeshua (Jesus). Jesus conquers sin in the believer by creating in him/her a new mind, a new outlook, a new person. The old sinful mind is not somehow patched up and coaxed along. No, it is confronted, slain and buried. In its place is put a new mind, a new outlook, a new person, a new creation. And this new creature or convert (which could be you!) is born to move in accordance with the requirements of the Father's law. Believe it or not, that is the reason why Jesus Christ (Yeshua the Messiah) came to this earth. He came to make his followers obedient to his Father's law. To be sure, he came to save mankind from the consequences of sin - which is eternal death. But over and above that initial task, his main reason for coming to earth was to empower the repentant believer to be obedient to his Father's law. This objective is mentioned in the following verses.
Romans 8:3-4 "For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."
Matthew 1:21 "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins."
Hebrews 8:10 " For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:"

In other words the Saviour came to save us from our sins: and to write his father's law on the tablets of our hearts and minds. NOTE:   Yeshua (Yahshua, Y'shua) is the Saviour's Hebrew name. Jesus is the Greek form. Both names mean salvation. Throughout SBS pages you will notice that these names are used. We trust that the reader will recognise that in every case we mean Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of the Almighty God. 7. THE LAW CANNOT SAVE THE SINNER
You will have noticed at point 6 that salvation comes through Jesus Christ. In other words, Yahweh's law, perfect though it is, cannot save a single sinner. It cannot make a lawbreaker obedient. No law can. Like a sacred signpost on the highway of life the law of the Most High can only point the way to life. It has no more power to change a sinner's character than a traffic sign has to move a motorist to his destination. The law can only point the way to right and wrong. That is all it can and was designed to do.
The purpose of Yahweh's law, in short, is to define sin, to make the sinner aware of what is wrong and what is right; and to point the way to salvation - to Christ!
Galatians 3:24 " Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith"

Some well-meaning believers have completely misunderstood the role of Yahweh's law in the great Plan of Salvation. They have incorrectly assumed that after the death of Jesus the law of God became obsolete. Nothing is further from the truth. Here are a few Scriptures concerning this vital matter of Yahweh's law and the results of obedience and disobedience.
(Psalm 19:7; Proverbs 28:4; Jeremiah 9:13-16; Hosea 4:6; Malachi 2:4-10; Matthew 5:17-18, 19:16-17; Romans 2:13; James 1:22-25; Revelation 22:14)
The only time you do not need the law of the Almighty God is when you are obeying it to perfection. 8. SUMMARY
  • Sin (lawlessness) is an inherent anti-God attitude which manifests itself in disobedience of one or more of the commandments of God.
  • Sin results in guilt, disease, disorder and disasters of all kinds.
  • There is no man-made remedy for sin. It is fatal.
  • Yahweh's law, perfect and holy though it is, is unable to save the sinner. Its primary purpose is simply to define sin and to point the sinner to Jesus Christ Yeshua the Messiah .
  • Sin can only be overcome by the power of Yahweh the Almighty God of Israel as administered through His Son: whose ultimate objective is to write his Father's law on the mind of all true believers. That is why he came to earth in the first place: to save his people from their sins.
  • In short: salvation comes through Jesus Christ.
Do you think you have the courage to acknowledge and accept the truth of this first lesson? If you do, then this Course is most certainly for you.

NOTHING CAN SEPARATE US FROM GOD, BUT SIN. BUT THANKS BE TO HIS MERCY, GRACE AND LOVE, WE CAN SINCERELY REPENT OF SIN AND TURN FROM EVIL AND TURN TO GOD. THEN HE (HIS 'HOLY' SPIRIT) THROUGH CHRIST (HIS SACRIFICE AS OUR PASSOVER AND CHRIST AS OUR HIGH PRIEST BEFORE GOD)...THEN THE FATHER WILL ABIDE IN US AS WE ABIDE IN CHRIST FOR CHRIST ABIDES IN THE FATHER AND THE FATHER IN CHRIST. AND HE THAT IS IN US IS GREATER THAN HE OF THE WORLD. IT'S A DAILY BATTLE, BUT WE KNOW THAT NOTHING CAN SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE, THE SPIRIT OF GOD. FOR THE ALMIGHTY GOD IS ETERNAL AND FOR GOD NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.  ALL THINGS ARE IN 'HIS' HAND, INCLUDING TIME AND INCLUDING MAN. WE ARE HIS CREATION, AND HE HAS AN "AWESOME PLAN FOR THE SONS OF MAN, FOR MANKIND, IF WE WILL HEAR AND OBEY HIS VOICE...THE 'PATH' IS NARROW. FOR ALL THAT GOD GIVES IS RIGHT, JUST AND OUT OF LOVE. NOTHING HE GIVES IS IN VAIN. HOW BLESSED WE ARE TO HAVE A RIGHTEOUS, JUST, HOLY, LOVING GOD. OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN.
Sing to God, sing praises to His name; Extol Him who rides on the clouds, By His name Yah, And rejoice before Him. (PSA 68:4)

Behold, God is my salvation, I

will trust and not be afraid; 'For Yah, the Lord, is my strength and song; He also has become my salvation.' "

(Isaiah 12:2 NKJ)

HE MADE US FREE WILLED BEINGS, WE HAVE TO WANT HIS WAYS, WE HAVE TO WANT HIS TRUTHS, HIS LOVE. WE'RE NOT ROBOTS. OR COMPUTERS. THE LORD HAS BLESSED US TO BE UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS YET WE ARE TO ALL BE AT ONE, WITH HIM, WITH HIS WAYS, THROUGH HIS SPIRIT. (EXAMPLE: YOU HAVE TEENAGE TRIPLETS, ALL OF THOSE CHILDREN WILL BE UNDER THE HOUSEHOLDS GOD DESIRES THAT NONE PERISH, BUT THAT ALL ARE BROUGHT TO REPENTANCE AND TURN FROM SIN (NOT FROM GOD) TO HIS WAYS (FROM GOD).

WE DON'T UNDERSTAND IT ALL. GOD'S THOUGHTS ARE HIGHER THAN OURS, BUT BY FAITH WE MUST OBEY HIS WORD, HIS VOICE. PRAYING FOR HIS HELP, FOR THE BATTLE IS NOT OURS ALONE (AND IT IS A TRUE 'SPIRITUAL' BATTLE), PRAYING FOR GOD'S DISCERNMENT.
GOD IS HOLY AND WILL NOT DWELL IN SIN (HE--HIS WORD--LIES NOT).
 Isaiah 59:1-2 (King James Version)

1Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither His ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

2But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you, that He will not hear.

["THE 10 COMMANDS"; THE 4TH COMMANDMENT--10:4]The blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins (Hebrews 10:4.
Therefore, forgiveness of sins was unique to the new covenant.
The Passover wine represents the new covenant in Christ's blood, which was shed for the remission of sins (Matthew 26:27-28).

'Father, why hast thou forsaken me?', Christ was the only One who pleased God (did God's will at all times--for He never was enemy to God--He never committed sin). But what did Christ do out of His love for us and His obedience to the will of God? He died for our sins, He was executed so that we may life again (for eternity with our Father). It was the only way and Christ is the ONLY way to the Father. Our only Example. He loved God (the 1st Greatest Command--Commandments 1-4) and He loved others (God's people--our fellowman/neighbor on this earth--the 2nd Greatest Command--Commandments 5-10). And He added to that Command, saying not only love another as you love yourself but love one another as He has loved you. Amen.

Christ introduced new symbols of the covenant. In keeping the Passover (as a remember/memorial unto Him) with His disciples (as He desired) the night He was arrested before the execution Christ showed that there would no longer be killing of a lamb for He was the True Lamb of God and now we are to take of His Body (the unleavened bread) and of His Blood (the wine) on the Passover (annually). He showed that the Law was now spiritual too (and He would pray for the Father to give us His Holy Spirit to keep His spiritual law). For murder is also having hate in your heart (without cause) towards another (Christ had cause and He still was full of God's real love--Spirit, and asked the Father to forgive us for we know not what we do 'when we were children we thought as children but when we are the accountable age we must think maturely--soberly 'spiritually'). Lust in the eyes, mind is still adultery before God. But spiritual adultery is also keeping 'days of worship' that God did not command for us (also spiritual fornication depending on the if we are 'covenant peoples' or not and the new covenant is through Christ and we enter into it when we are baptised by the water in Christ's and the Father's name and impregnated with God's Holy Spirit and then we continue to grow spiritually until the time to be "born again" as "spirit" beings into the Kingdom--Family of GodNicodemus asked him, "How can anyone be born when he's an old man? He can't go back inside his mother a 'BORN AGAIN', can he?" (John 3:4)) for He can only be worshipped in truth and spirit. Failing to love someone is also hate that is what hate is failing to love another.

No one (well except the 'harlot' church who uses idols in worship) would say that the 1st through 3rd Commandments are done away and no one would say that the 5th through 10th Commandments are done away so way do we want 1-3 and 5-10 but NOT 4??? It's deception at it's best, the 'wide' path, for 'lack of knowledge' that's why we have to 'seek'.

Ezekiel 33 (New King James Version)

1 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 "Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and say to them: 'When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from their territory and make him their watchman, 3 when he sees the sword coming upon the land, if he blows the trumpet and warns the people, 4 then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be on his own head. 5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will save his life. 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.' 7 "So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me. 8 When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you shall surely die!' and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. 9 Nevertheless if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul. 10 "Therefore you, O son of man, say to the house of Israel: 'Thus you say, "If our transgressions and our sins lie upon us, and we pine away in them, how can we then live?" ' 11 Say to them: 'As I live,' says the Lord God, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?' 12 "Therefore you, O son of man, say to the children of your people: 'The righteousness of the righteous man shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression; as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall because of it in the day that he turns from his wickedness; nor shall the righteous be able to live because of his righteousness in the day that he sins.' 13 When I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, but he trusts in his own righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous works shall be remembered; but because of the iniquity that he has committed, he shall die. 14 Again, when I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right, 15 if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has stolen, and walks in the statutes of life without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 None of his sins which he has committed shall be remembered against him; he has done what is lawful and right; he shall surely live. 17 "Yet the children of your people say, 'The way of the Lord is not fair.' But it is their way which is not fair! 18 When the righteous turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he shall die because of it. 19 But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he shall live because of it. 20 Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not fair.' O house of Israel, I will judge every one of you according to his ownWAYS.

Ezekiel 3:11 (New King James Version)

11 And go, get to the captives, to the children of your people, and speak to them and tell them, 'Thus says the Lord God,' whether they hear, or whether they refuse."

Ezekiel 3:17-21 (New King James Version)

17 "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: 18 When I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. 19 Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul. 20 Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die; because you did not give him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at your hand. 21 Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man that the righteous should not sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live because he took warning; also you will have delivered your soul."

Isaiah 26:4 NKJ

Trust in the Lord forever, For in Yah, the Lord, is everlasting strength.

  1. God’s Holy Spirit is the crucial element that makes the New Covenant workable, in contrast to the Old Covenant that failed because of Israel’s disobedience. Hebrews 8:10 (which quotes Jeremiah 31:33) states, “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord; I will put My laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to Me a people.”

  2. Under the Old Covenant, Israel showed that with the best of intentions, the human spirit was willing but the flesh was weak. Why was the Old Covenant at fault? Romans 8:7; Hebrews 8:7-8.

Ancient Israel proved that human “steam” is not enough. Their example was recorded for our admonition, “upon whom the ends of the world are come” (I Cor. 10:11).

Can natural carnal minds without God’s Spirit remain submissive to God even while beholding His continual miracles and interventions? Numbers 14:22; Deuteronomy 32:30.

Did God give His Spirit to various prophets and individuals with whom He was working during the time of the patriarchs and of ancient Israel? II Peter 1:21; I Samuel 16:13; Daniel 4:18; Micah 3:8.

These scriptures are just a few of many showing that God gave His Spirit to a select few according to His Plan. Daniel 4:18 comes from the words of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, who only had limited understanding of the true God, and would expectedly use such a term as “the spirit of the gods” in describing God’s Spirit in Daniel.

In Acts 1:8, Christ promised, “But you shall receive power after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you…” What series of events had to precede the Holy Spirit being made available to Christ’s disciples? John 7:37-39; 16:7.

These scriptures show that Christ had to “go away” and be glorified before God’s Spirit could be given. Only after His death, resurrection and ascension to Heaven could the Holy Spirit be made available. The term “belly” in John 7:38 comes from the Greek word koilia, which means “abdomen,” usually figuratively translated “heart.” Also, the term “ghost”(vs. 39), from the Greek word pneuma, should have been translated “Spirit.”

What new element enters the picture by the New Covenant so that man can obey God’s laws? Jeremiah 31:33; Ezekiel 36:26-27.

Although the New Covenant has not yet officially begun, this will occur in the soon-coming millennium, as the Holy Spirit is made available to all humanity. To have the Law of God written in one’s heart is to live the meaning of I John 5:3: “For this is the love of God that we keep His commandments…” To become perfected in love is to be perfect in obedience to God’s Law.

Will God’s Spirit become available for all who desire to receive it? Joel 2:28-29.

These verses reflect the time when those who live into the millennium will experience truly abundant and fulfilled lives.

Note that verse 28 begins, “And it shall come to pass afterward…” This shows that only after these people receive a certain level of preliminary knowledge and understanding of God’s truth can they receive the Holy Spirit.

Also, after they have their basic physical necessities restored, they can begin to focus more clearly on the spiritual level.

Christ—With Full Measure of the Holy Spirit

Was Christ begotten by the Holy Spirit? Luke 1:35; Matthew 1:20.

From the beginning of His physical life, Christ was strong in God’s Spirit because He was not only begotten physically by the Spirit, but begotten spiritually, as well.

As a youth, did Christ show unusual insight and zeal for the Scriptures? Luke 2:40, 46-48.

To be strengthened and inspired by God’s Spirit caused the youth to learn the truths of God and history of mankind at an unprecedented rate. His knowledge and understanding of Scripture stunned the Jewish religious leaders.

  3. To what extent did Christ have the Holy Spirit? John 3:34.

Christ possessed the full measure of the Holy Spirit, through which He was able to perform unprecedented miracles and healings. His discernment of the thoughts and intents of others was keen and precise. He spoke with resounding authority, for He was the God of the Old Covenant, by whom God the Father had created the worlds.

Did Christ set the example for true Christians to emulate? John 13:15; I Peter 2:21; I John 2:5-6. Christ set the standard we are to follow. By the mouths of false accusers, He endured injustice (suffering wrongly), as we must do. When suffering, He did not threaten, but rather submitted to “not My will, but the Father’s will be done.”

Does Christ live His life over again through true Christians? Galatians 2:20.

By continuing to seek God’s way throughout life, one can gradually take on the mind of Christ (Phil. 2:5) through the infusion of God’s Spirit.

In what role is Christ serving at this time in helping true Christians to overcome? Hebrews 6:20; 7:26.

As our High Priest, Christ has been interceding on behalf of true Christians—for their forgiveness upon repentance, their healing, and their spiritual strength and wisdom. Since Christ lives to make intercession for us (Heb. 7:25; 4:14-16), He understands our limitations, having suffered while in the flesh. We have every reason to succeed and overcome with such an advocate, who is ever willing for us to succeed with the spiritual power He makes available to us.

    Church Empowered by Holy Spirit

Did Christ instruct His disciples to await the arrival of the Holy Spirit? Acts 1:8.

When gathered together for Pentecost in Jerusalem in A.D. 31, amidst many Jews also gathered there, what happened to the 120 disciples? Acts 2:1-4.

What was the Jews’ response to those unusual events? Acts 2:5-7, 12-13.

Besides the miracle of speaking in unknown languages, and Peter’s bold testimony before thousands, what other events transpired that day? Acts 2:41-42.

By what power was Peter able to speak so boldly and assuredly as never before? Acts 4:8.

After being threatened by Jewish authorities shortly after Pentecost, the disciples later came together to pray for strength. What signs did God give that He heard their prayer? Acts 4:31. “The place was shaken” actually meant that God sent forth earthquake tremors. Besides this physical sign, the disciples were “filled with the Holy Spirit.” They were given an additional measure of the Holy Spirit besides the initial amount given on the Day of Pentecost. God is no respecter of persons. If we pray as fervently as these disciples, we too can receive more of God’s Spirit.

    Source of Spiritual Strength

Does the Holy Spirit inspire an attitude of love, power and sound-mindedness? II Timothy 1:6-7.

Are God’s servants to focus on their own talents and skills to accomplish His Work? Zechariah 4:6.

Can God’s Spirit bring to mind what Christ has instructed from our study of Scripture? John 14:26; I Corinthians 2:10.

What characterized the ministry of Paul as he preached the gospel? Romans 15:19.

What is another of the many attributes the Holy Spirit imparts to one’s mind? Philippians 4:7; Romans 8:6.

Comment: Because of the prevailing characteristic of peace the Spirit brings to the mind, Christ referred to it as the “Comforter.” He told the disciples, “And I will pray the Father and He shall give you another Comforter that it may abide with you forever” (John 14:16).

The term “another Comforter” meant that the Holy Spirit would bring them peace and assurance just as Christ had done during His time with them. The Comforter is also called “the Spirit of truth” (John 15:26).

Were there some things that Christ could not communicate to the disciples until they had the Holy Spirit within them? John 16:12-13.

Does the Holy Spirit compensate for the inability of the natural human intellect, communicating directly to God what we are otherwise incapable of expressing? Romans 8:26-27.

  4. Christian Growth

Is the Holy Spirit freely available in this age to all who desire it? John 6:44, 65. The Holy Spirit will not be offered freely to everyone until the millennium, at which time it will be poured out upon “all flesh.” In this age, only those called by God to fulfill a particular purpose are given the Holy Spirit. These are the firstfruits called to help rule in the soon-coming kingdom of God.

Unlike those in the millennium and those in the general resurrection to occur later, those called in this age will have a much more difficult path—having to resist Satan, his world and the flesh—but they will be given a far greater reward for all eternity.

What must those called in this age do to receive more of the Holy Spirit? Luke 11:9-13. Some have erroneously looked upon the process of receiving the Holy Spirit as an end in itself, giving them an inside track to seek God on their own terms. Those who are called and who seek and ask God from a motive of sincerity and purity because they want to get into harmony with God’s will for all eternity are the ones who will thrive and grow upon receiving His Spirit.

What initial—earlier—steps are required to receive God’s Spirit? Acts 2:38; 5:32. Upon baptism and the laying on of hands (Acts 8:16-17), one is given an earnest (downpayment) measure of God’s Spirit (II Cor. 1:22).

How are we to be changed or transformed through the use of God’s Spirit? II Corinthians 4:16; Romans 12:2; Ephesians 4:1, 11-15. Besides the inward man being renewed on a daily basis, and being transformed by a renewing of the mind, we must seek God on a personal basis.
